“This gem of a property is situated in a valley plain that has been farmed for many hundreds of years. The Roman irrigation system known as alvaneis, created 800 years ago, still works as intended today, simple yet effective. The tinkling bells of the sheep from one side, followed by the different but equally beautiful bells of the goats from the other side, provide the morning music as you drink your fresh orange juice squeezed from fruit that hangs just outside your door. The sun warms your body as the chickens and ducks go about their morning routine, which you watch with absent-minded pleasure.
I have a Farm bed and breakfast on Lummi Island, on the west coast of Washington. I have raised chickens for more than 30 years, and have not eaten a store-bought egg in all that time. But although I buy the best organic feed for my birds, I can honestly say the eggs from Benoît and Callie’s chickens are the best I have ever had.
